WhatsApp Business or the API? What an appointments business actually needs
The app is free and sent by hand. The API sends automatically and costs per message. The deciding difference is not size — it is whether the message must go out without anyone remembering.

Most comparisons on this frame it as business size: the app for small, the API for large. That is the wrong distinction, and businesses choose by it and discover six months later they are in the wrong tool.
The real difference: who presses send
- The WhatsApp Business app — free, lives on a phone, every message sent by hand. Excellent for talking to a customer. Useless for a reminder that has to go out at 20:00 when you are already home.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) — runs on a server, sends automatically on an event, costs per message. It is what makes "a reminder 24 hours before" a real sentence rather than a good intention.
A business with ten appointments a day that wants automatic reminders needs the API. A business with a hundred conversations a day that only chats does not. Size is not the parameter — automation is.
Two mistakes in the explanations you will find
- "You must go through a BSP." Not true. Meta offers direct Cloud API access, and Sagarnu works against it with no intermediary. A BSP is an option, not a requirement.
- "You can send whatever you like." No. A message initiated outside a conversation window has to be a pre-approved template, and a marketing template only goes to people who opted in — see the spam law.
If you are considering the API purely for reminders, check first whether your booking system already sends them. Standing up your own API connection to send a reminder the system sends anyway is duplicated work.
In Sagarnu that connection already exists and is managed — you do not open a Meta account or get templates approved. How reminders work.
Common questions
Can the WhatsApp Business app send automatic reminders?
Not really. It has quick replies and a greeting message, but it will not send a message at a set time before an event without someone opening it and pressing send. That gap is exactly what the API closes.
Do I need a BSP to use the API?
No. Meta provides direct Cloud API access. A BSP is one route among several, and many guides present it as mandatory because the guide is written by one.
What does it cost?
The API is priced per message, varying by message category and country. If your reminders come through your booking system, that cost is usually already inside the plan — worth checking before you build a connection of your own.
