Opening hours and breaks: not selling an hour you do not work

Most calendar chaos comes from three settings: hours that are not accurate, a break the system does not know about, and closures remembered too late.

Opening hours look like the dullest setting in the system, and they cause a large share of the frustration: every appointment booked into an hour you do not actually work becomes an awkward phone call.

The three settings that fix most of it

  • Real hours, not aspirations. If you open at 9:00 but the first customer is never before 9:30, set 9:30. An hour sold and not honoured is worse than an hour never sold.
  • A recurring break. If you take lunch, the system has to know. In Sagarnu that is a separate setting and it is off by default — it does not switch itself on, and until you switch it on that hour is being sold.
  • Closures in advance. In Israel, holidays close automatically from the active calendars; what you enter by hand is leave, reserve duty or a one-off closed day. A minute up front saves eight phone calls later.
⚠️

The break is off by default deliberately — a setting that turned itself on would close 13:00–14:00 for every new business that never asked for it. Which means you have to turn it on explicitly.

With those three set, the availability a customer sees is your real calendar rather than an optimistic version of it — how the calendar works.

Common questions

My break is not at a fixed time. What then?

There is currently no way to block a single hour on one specific day: the recurring setting applies to the whole week, and a manual closure covers a whole day. So the two real options are to set the hour that recurs most often and live with the gap, or close a full day when you genuinely need to. That is a known gap rather than a setting to hunt for.

Do I have to enter the holidays every year?

Not if your business is in Israel. The Jewish and national holiday calendars are on by default in the Israeli market only, and those dates close to booking automatically each year. A business outside Israel does not get those calendars at all and enters closures by hand. Either way the exceptions stay with you: if you do work a particular holiday eve, you reopen that date specifically.
